Do you want to know where you can go hiking in Sterzing and its environs? Take the cable car up to the Rosskopf – it is not only great for skiing near Sterzing – go to the Kuh- or Ochsenalm along the Ridnauner-Höhenweg high altitude trails or to Stilfes for an idyllic walk through a lovely village with rustic inns. Here are our personal highlights for hiking in Sterzing and its dreamy side valleys.
Vallmingalm Mountain Hut
Take the cable car to the Rosskopf and continue hiking from the mountain station to the Vallmingalm. A rustic Alpine village surrounded by lush pastures at 1,500 to 2,500 metres above sea level awaits you. We recommend a visit in June when the Alpine roses provide a colourful carpet of blossoms.
Wasserfaller Alm Mountain Hut
The Wasserfaller Alm is located at 1,910 metres above sea level. One way to reach it is via a three-hour hike from Ratschings. A well-deserved snack awaits you at the rustic hut.
Mareiter Stein Peak
For this hike from Ratschings, you need stamina and surefootedness. Depending on your chosen route, you will have to ascend about a thousand metres. But the panoramic view from the 2,192-metre-high summit is worth all the effort.
Trenser Höhenweg Trail
The Trenser Höhenweg high mountain trail is one of the easier hikes in Sterzing. It is perfect for a nice walk. The circular hike starts at the Maria Trens pilgrimage church and leads you to Sprechenstein Castle in the Sterzing valley basin. If you are looking for a challenge, we recommend a detour to the Trenser Joch.
