Hikes in Sterzing: our tips

Do you want to know where you can go hiking in Sterzing and its environs? Take the cable car up to the Rosskopf – it is not only great for skiing near Sterzing – go to the Kuh- or Ochsenalm along the Ridnauner-Höhenweg high altitude trails or to Stilfes for an idyllic walk through a lovely village with rustic inns. Here are our personal highlights for hiking in Sterzing and its dreamy side valleys.

Take the cable car to the Rosskopf and continue hiking from the mountain station to the Vallmingalm. A rustic Alpine village surrounded by lush pastures at 1,500 to 2,500 metres above sea level awaits you. We recommend a visit in June when the Alpine roses provide a colourful carpet of blossoms.

The Wasserfaller Alm is located at 1,910 metres above sea level. One way to reach it is via a three-hour hike from Ratschings. A well-deserved snack awaits you at the rustic hut.

For this hike from Ratschings, you need stamina and surefootedness. Depending on your chosen route, you will have to ascend about a thousand metres. But the panoramic view from the 2,192-metre-high summit is worth all the effort.

The Trenser Höhenweg high mountain trail is one of the easier hikes in Sterzing. It is perfect for a nice walk. The circular hike starts at the Maria Trens pilgrimage church and leads you to Sprechenstein Castle in the Sterzing valley basin. If you are looking for a challenge, we recommend a detour to the Trenser Joch.

Bike and action on holiday in Sterzing

Road biking on the Jaufen Pass, mountain biking on Monte Sella and the Schneideralm Alpine pasture, or taking it a little easier on the extensive network of cycle paths in the surrounding valleys – a biking holiday in Sterzing offers one thing above all: variety.

There is also plenty to do for those who enjoy sports with a little more action in Sterzing. Swing from tree to tree in the Skytrek high ropes course. Enjoy the view while paragliding, or get the full dose of adrenaline while rafting on the Eisack river. Experience pure nature with everything it has to offer.
